Dental emergency

In pain? Call us first — right now.

A phone call gets you triaged in a minute. A form does not. We hold time each day for emergencies, and we see people who have never been patients here.

What to do before you get here

Knocked-out tooth

Hold it by the crown, not the root. Rinse gently with milk or saline — do not scrub. Put it back in the socket if you can and bite on gauze; otherwise keep it in milk. Call immediately. Minutes matter.

Broken tooth or lost crown

Rinse with warm water. Save any pieces. Cover a sharp edge with sugar-free gum or dental wax so it does not cut your tongue. Avoid chewing on that side.

Severe toothache

Rinse with warm salt water and floss gently to remove anything trapped. Over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the label. Do not put aspirin directly on the gum.

Swelling

Facial swelling means infection is spreading and needs same-day attention. Cold compress on the outside. Call us now.

Bitten lip or tongue

Clean gently, apply firm pressure with gauze, cold compress for swelling. If bleeding will not stop after 15 minutes of pressure, go to an emergency room.

Something else

If you are not sure whether it is an emergency, call and describe it. We would much rather tell you it can wait than have you sit at home in pain.

When to go to a hospital instead

Go to an emergency room, not a dental office, if you have swelling that affects your breathing, swallowing or vision; bleeding that will not stop; a suspected broken jaw; or injuries from a serious accident. Those need hospital care first — we will handle the tooth afterwards.

After hours

If you call outside office hours, leave a message with your name, a callback number and a short description of what is happening. Messages are checked the next business morning. If you cannot wait, seek urgent medical care.
